Do I Need a Bullion Locker Safe? Comparing Options

Bullion Locker Safes vs. Safe Deposit Boxes: Which Is Right for Your Precious Metals?

Many of our clients store gold, silver, and platinum holdings at Reserve Vault, and we offer a range of storage options to suit different needs — from standard safe deposit boxes through to purpose-built bullion locker units designed for higher weights. Through our partnerships with local bullion dealers, deliveries to our facility can also be arranged directly, removing the need to transport significant value yourself.

Choosing the right storage option matters: the wrong one can mean cramped capacity, weight limits, or insurance shortfalls. This article compares our bullion locker safes with our regular safe deposit boxes so you can decide which suits your holding.

Features of our bullion locker safes

Our most in-demand storage unit, the bullion locker is built for practicality. A spacious access door makes loading and retrieving heavy items straightforward, and each unit is secured with an Abus 83/50 lock issued exclusively to the individual client. At the end of the lease period, the client retains ownership of the lock — there are no shared keys or duplicate sets held by us.

Built for heavy holdings

Regular safe deposit boxes provide solid everyday security, but they aren't designed around the weight profile of significant bullion holdings. Our bullion lockers are. The heavy slotted steel construction and reinforced walls support the load of stacked bullion without strain, and the purpose-built design adds resilience against fire, water damage, and other unforeseen events.

In short: a standard safe deposit box is well suited to documents, jewellery, and modest precious metal holdings. Once volumes increase, a bullion locker is the more appropriate choice — both for the physical capacity and for the structural support.

Insurance considerations

Our insurance policy specifies a maximum value for items stored in a standard safe deposit box. If the value of what you intend to store exceeds that threshold, a bullion locker is required to keep your holding within the insured limits. It's worth checking with us before you start consolidating a larger position into a single box, so we can match you to the right unit from the outset.

The bottom line

For everyday valuables, a regular safe deposit box does the job well. For substantial precious metal holdings, our bullion locker safes are the better fit — purpose-built construction, generous capacity, an individually owned high-security lock, and an insurance framework designed around bullion-scale values.
